This page covers June 29th, 30th, and also July 1, the final day of our spur of the moment vacation. We begin with a climb to a high point of the Grizzly Lake Trail. It's an 11 kilometer hike to Grizzly Lake, so we only went to a high spot along the way - the Mount Monolith Viewpoint. On June 30th we headed for home and have included a few photos from that day, and on July 1st we arrived home and we've included a single smoky sky shot from that day. Click on any thumbnail to begin.

Begin June 29th |
Here are shots of Daniel at the Grizzly Lake Trailhead, and then two shots that were taken as we hiked upwards. We'll be up there on top of those peaks shown in the third photo. |

The park staff told us we would be able to find Forget-me-Not plants/flowers along this trail; they were not wrong, but we expected to find more than 3 plants! |

These three photos show that we have reached our destination - the Viewpoint for Mt. Monolith, one mountain in the Tombstone Range. Too bad it is so smoky. I have done my best to clean up these photos, but they still show lots of smoke. |

Well, it's about time to begin our descent back to the trailhead, so here is a final shot from the Mt. Monolith Viewpoint, then a shot of Kazuya on the trail, and then a grouse teaching her young how to do a dust bath. |

End June 29th, Begin June 30th |
Now it's June 30th and we are leaving to come back home. The first shot was a goodbye to Tombstone Mountain Campground. The second shot shows a large beaver pond, and the third shot shows a family of Canada Geese living on the same beaver pond. |

In this row we are traveling the Top of the World Highway and this is where we stopped to eat our lunch. The second shot is a zoomed in photo of the patch of Saxifrage that Kazuya is shooting in the first photo. In the third photo we're on the Taylor Highway - stopping at Chicken, Alaska for a sweet snack and a cup of coffee. |

End June 30th, Begin July 1st |
Now it's July 1st and we are nearing home. This is the Chena Hot Springs Road and our home is on that ridge at the top of the next hill. As you can see, it's still smoky, but it is raining, so it should get better. |
