The first shot here is a Shibateranthis pinnatifida (also known as Eranthis pinnatifida). This is an endangered species in Japan. We found this one in a special part of Nogawa Park on February 8th. The 2nd image is the same shot with some PhotoShop effect used which highlights the flower's texture. The 3rd shot is a Wintersweet - also in the special part of Nogawa Park. |

The first 2 shots here are both Pertya spp. at Mt. Takao. The first shot was taken on February 11th and is a fully opened seed head with all of the seeds gone. The 2nd shot - included primarily for contrast - was taken on March 25, 2004 - obviously a different species because even though later in the season, the seed head is not yet open. The 3rd shot is the first Asarum sp. of this season - also February 11th on Mt. Takao. |

On February 18th we went to Tsuru-Tsuru Hot Spring and after our soak we hiked down to the White Rock Waterfall. The first shot is the sign at the start of the trail. The 2nd shot is about 90% of the waterfall and the 3rd shot is only the very top part of the waterfall. Compare the 3rd shot with the 2nd shot and try to find what part of the waterfall you are looking at. |

On the trail to White Rock Waterfall we found a bunch of "Winterberries". It was well past the peak of the season for them, and Kazuya collected about 99% of those shown here - my eyes have trouble finding them. He made a watery jam out of them, it was tasty though. A couple of you should notice the newspaper!! |
