This page begins with February 5th and a Northern Red-backed Vole (Myodes rutilus) searching for sunflower seeds under our bird feeders. Then we go to February 6th and some beautiful sunset shots taken in a field near our house. February 7th was a beautiful sunny day and there are some photos taken from our porch. Then on the 8th two moose (Alces alces) came wandering through the yard once again and spent about an hour tearing apart a brush pile to get the edible twigs and branches that were in it. There are a few photos from February 9th showing snow in the trees on our property and then there are some amazing Sun Dog photos, taken on the 11th. The final photos on this page are some sunrise shots taken on the 14th of February.  Click on any thumbnail to begin.

Here are two shots of a Northern Red-backed Vole (Myodes rutilus) searching for sunflower seeds under the bird feeders. The birds sometimes knock seeds out of the feeders and these small voles are often seen coming out of their snow tunnels and spending time searching for seeds. |

Here are three amazing sunset shots (about 4:40 PM). We can get to this spot by walking up the road from our house for about 10 minutes. The outlined area in the center photo shows the area that is included in the third photo. |

Here are three more sunset shots on February 6th. The sun is setting behind Birch Hill, a prominent hill on the east side of Fairbanks, Alaska. |

At about 1:00 PM on February 7th the sun was shining so brightly through the trees that it was just amazing to see. That 4" x 4" post which you can see out there is supposed to be a snow depth gauge, but the markings have all disappeared through the years and we did not get around to painting them back on. At this time I would have to estimate that the snow is at least 1 meter deep (about 3 feet). |

Here are the final two shots of the sun shining through the trees on February 7th. These two shots are both looking up our driveway, which we shovel by hand. By the way, we've had at least another 1.5 feet of snow since these shots were taken. |

On February 8th two moose (Alces alces) came wandering through our property again. Usually they just wander across, browsing the brushy plants as they wander through. This time, however, they spent at least an hour tearing apart the brush pile which we made when we cut down some dying trees. In the winter, moose eat small branches and twigs and there was just too much delicious stuff in this pile to pass up! |

As you may have noticed in the moose photos just above, it snowed on February 8th, so on the 9th Kazuya took these amazing shots of blue sky and fresh snow in the trees. |

Have you ever seen what are called Sun Dogs? Here is an amazing shot of sun dogs and even what might be considered a sun bow. HERE is a really nice article about them, you'll have to scroll down on that page though. |

On the same day that we saw the above sun dogs Kazuya shot these photos out the front window of our pickup as we were coming home. This was at about 3.0 mile on the Chena Hot Springs Road. |

These final three shots on this page were taken by Kazuya on February 14th at about 8:48 AM, some amazing sunrise colors. On the 14th the sunrise was at 8:51 AM. We have been gaining 6 - 7 minutes of sun per day since then and by February 28th the sunrise was at 8:02 AM. |
