This page begins with January 14 and a walk up the hill from home to the top of Gettinger's Field. Then there are some snow photos around our property, another walk up the road, some sunrise colors, and finally some shots of a January 30th Aurora Borealis display. Then we enter February with some Moose (Alces alces) wandering around on our property. In the final row are some photos of our houseplants and flowers. Click on any thumbnail to begin.

The first shot in this row is the view from the top of Gettinger's Field looking south to the Alaska Range. The center shot shows a moose lying on the edge of the woods chewing its cud. The third shot was taken the following day from about the same spot as the first photo.

These three shots were all taken from our own property. The first image, a two-shot vertical panorama is looking south from our front porch. The second and third shots show how much the snow has settled since the huge snowstorm of late December.

Here is another shot which shows how much the snow has settled since late December. The center image is another two-shot vertical panorama looking up our driveway. The third image is a two-shot panorama taken from the top of Gettinger's Field, near our home.

The first shot here was taken as an iPhone Panorama, and is again looking across Gettinger's Field. It's very similar to the previous shot, but not the same. The center image is a sunrise time photo which has been adjusted to bring out the colors better. The third image is the same as the center one, but it has been HDR (High Dynamic Range) processed using Photoshop®.

On February 7 I looked out the window and saw two moose walking down our driveway. Were they coming for tea and crumpets? Oh dear, we had none, so we hoped not. This winter the snow is so deep that they are sticking to the plowed roads and paths more than they usually do, and there have been several reports of aggressive moose this winter due to this deep snow and the resulting difficulty in obtaining food. We took all of these photos from inside the house.

They walked the cleared path to our storage shed and stepped off into the deep snow there, but the leader decided he didn't like it and they both came back.

As you can see in these three photos, they walked back up the driveway partway and then went into the woods where there were a good bunch of birch and aspen saplings they could eat the smaller twigs from. In the center photo, it is moose #1 which did not walk down the driveway earlier, it just hung out in the area shown here and ate. After moose #2 and #3 browsed the saplings for a while, they laid down for 2 or 3 hours and spent some time chewing their cuds. Moose #1 just wandered off and disappeared.

Here is a February 20th two-shot panorama looking east from our porch. The second shot is a Hairy Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus villosus) hammering away at frozen unsalted butter. With the kind of cold we have here, this butter freezes as hard as can be and the birds stop by and peck off tiny chunks at a time.

In first position is a collage of our house plants which I created on February 14. It shows our Jewel Orchid (Ludisia discolor), Christmas and Easter Cacti, an Amaryllis and the current flower arrangement on that date. The center image shows the history of our Amaryllis plant and the third image shows the Amaryllis and the Jewel Orchid on February 21.
