This is Page 1 of 1 - the best of June and July 2025!
posted: July 8, 2025

This page begins with several garden photos, most of which were taken during the month of June. Beginning in Row 5, through the end of the page, are photos we took during our two day trip to Twelvemile Summit and Eagle Summit on July 2 and 3. We spent one night in our pickup truck topper at the Eagle Summit Wayside. It was a wonderful escape from the heat of the Fairbanks valley, and also a wonderful escape from the smoke-filled Fairbanks air that is due to several terrible wildfires in the area.   In first and third positions in this row you see beautiful Columbine photos. These are volunteers in our garden. The center photo shows a Bleeding Heart (Dicentra sp.). It is a purchased plant.

In first and third positions in this row are photos of Frigid Shooting Star (Dodecatheon frigidum). In the center is a shot of Parry's Wallflower (Parrya nudicaulis). These shots were all taken near Twelvemile Summit.

Now we have moved to a place with no name. The wind was absolutely howling here and it was chilly, even with the bright sun. As you can see in the photo, it was a beautifully clear day though. The second shot is a nice one of Mountain Avens (Dryas octopetala). The third shot shows a nice little patch of Macoun's Poppy (Papaver macounii).

Here is a photo of Kazuya shooting the Macoun's Poppy (Papaver macounii). The center shot is probably a Snow Arnica (Arnica griscomii ssp. frigida). The third shot shows a rather nice display of Twice-hairy Butterweed (Tephroseris lindstroemii).

In first position in this row you see a Great Burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis), a species that we have never seen up here before. And we only found a single plant - where did it come from? The center shot is a Yukon Grounsel (Tephroseris yukonensis), we found many more of this plant than we generally find. In third position is Inky (Pale) Gentian (Gentiana glauca), there also seemed to be more of this than we generally see.

End July 2nd, Begin July 3rd
Now it is July 3rd. The wind has died down considerably, the air is a little smokier than it was yesterday, and the morning temperature was 47°. The first shot was taken at about 12:25 AM. Yes, the sun did set. The center shot shows the smoky air at around 5:30 AM, while the third shot shows a better looking sky at 7:00 AM. We'll go hiking out there below those snowfields after breakfast.

In first and second position here are photos of Few-flowered Corydalis (Corydalis pauciflora). We always find just a very few of this species here. In third position is a fine example of Mountain Campion or Apetalous Catchfly (Silene uralensis ssp. uralensis). We had never found this species at this exact location here, and had never found it in the numbers we found it on this date.
