This page actually begins a bit before Winter officially began. The first photos show the Farmers Market Holiday Bazaar on December 9th. After that we jump to a snow shot in our yard, then some food and plant photos. After that you'll see the December 31st (New Year's Eve) Fireworks at the University of Alaska West Ridge. Then it's some New Year's Day food, and then photos taken during a super cold spell that we had in early February. Click on any thumbnail to begin.

Begin December 2023
These three photos represent our biggest event in December, the Annual Farmers Market Holiday Bazaar. Kazuya made a total of 28 loaves of Stollen this year. In the center shot you can see it wrapped and bound with light blue ribbon near the left side of the photo. The third photo shows what a loaf looks like when sliced open. Yummy!

Christmas Eve. Kazuya made these most amazing cream puffs to take to a Christmas Eve dinner with good friends that we were invited to. The second and third shots show new Christmas Ornaments given to us by our friends, the Maisch family. Note that one is in the shape of a Petit-four and the other is Tiramisu.

Here are two shots of our Christmas Cake that Kazuya made, and a shot of me eating pan-seared Hokkaido scallops - this was our Christmas Dinner.

And then January 31st was suddenly upon us, and we went up to the University of Alaska - West Ridge for the Annual New Year's Eve Fireworks Display. This year we mostly just watched it rather than trying to take a hundred photos.

Kazuya created these two photos that represent 2023 - the first one is entitled "Cakes and Cream Puffs 2023" and the second one is entitled "Dan Collage 2023".

For January 6th, Epiphany, Kazuya made this King's Cake. The second shot shows that it was filled with edible chestnuts. Yummy.

The first shot was taken on January 11th at "high noon", which is at about 12:50 PM when we are on Standard Time. By January 11th we had already gained an hour of possible sun since the Solstice, but at high noon the sun was still only 4° above the horizon. Our front windows face south, so the sun is visible out the window in this photo, and the photo is annotated to show you where the sun is shining on the interior walls. Even in the dead of winter we get sunshine in our house. The center shot shows the view from our west window on January 12th, and the third shot shows the same view on January 15th.

The first shot here shows a view from our walk up the road on January 23rd. The faraway mountains are the Eastern ones in the Alaska Range. The center shot shows that we had -40F° at 6:10 AM on January 27. The third shot shows the AccuWeather iPhone forecast for the next few days - January 31st thru February 4th.

End January 2024, Begin February 2024
On February 1st and 2nd we had super cold weather, officially we had -50F°, for the first time since January 18th, 2017. All three of these photos show the ice fog in downtown Fairbanks. This is NOT the same as what people in the Lower 48 call "ice fog", this ice fog cannot form until it reaches a cold of at least -30F°. All three photos in this row were taken by Kazuya.

Here are two of my photos of this ice fog, and also an image (screen capture from iPhone) which shows the AccuWeather temperature at 10:47 AM on February 2nd. This was the Steele Creek reporting station - the one closest to our house. Thankfully we are uphill from Steele Creek, and it's always "warmer in the hills."
