This page begins with September 24th and a trip up the Elliott Highway into the White Mountains in search of autumn colors and beautiful scenes. Then there are a few shots of the first significant snow of the season in our yard. For the final few rows we are in the White Mountains again, but this time, on the Steese Highway all the way to Eagle Summit. Click on any thumbnail to begin.

Begin September 24th
Here are three shots of the most amazingly wide and bright sun dog that we've ever seen. WOW! These sun dogs appear at 22° either side of the sun, though in this instance there was no sun dog on the left side of the sun.

In addition to the sun dogs, we were also privileged enough to be shown two more arcs above the sun, one at 22° above the sun (Upper Tangent Arc) and one at 44° above the sun (Circumzenithal Arc). WOW!

As you will notice here, we were successful in finding autumn colors. We were surprised, we thought that we would be too late to find them as most of the leaves near our home had already dropped.

Now we are near milepost 39 on the Elliott Highway and looking at the Grapefruit Rocks area, which had an intense wildfire last summer (2024). Here you can see pioneer species that come in following a forest fire. The first two photos show that an abundance of fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium) appeared, while the third photo shows a species that was new to us. This is the rock harlequin (Capnoides sempervirens), such a beautiful little flower. We also found several other pioneer species that we could not identify, we'll try again next summer when they are in bloom.

End September 24th, Begin Late September
The first snowfall over one inch hit on September 28th this year. The average date for the first inch is on October 9th, so it was early this year. The first shot shows our west yard and the second shot is our very sad garden - boo hoo.

The photos in this row show our garden after we spent several hours cleaning it up. All of the black cloth and black plastic pots were moved under the porch for the winter a few days later. If they stayed in their spots all winter they would all be destroyed by the heavy snows.

On September 30th we took a drive up the Steese Highway to Eagle Summit. We knew that there was snow up there already, but we didn't know how much, and we definitely did not expect to have to drive through a couple of heavy localized snow showers to get there. There were no problems with our new Blizzak Tires. The first shot was taken at the Blue Anemone place, and the final two shots were taken from the Eagle Summit Wayside.

The first shot here is an interesting one with the shadows and the sun. The second shot was actually taken while we were driving to Eagle Summit through a localized heavy snow shower. The third shot was taken at Twelvemile Summit.

This shows what our rig looked like when we got home. After milepost 81 on the Steese Highway the road changes to gravel/dirt. In the lower elevations the snow was melting and there was mud. BLAH!!

These final two shots were taken on October 1st. The first one shows a box of various types of pumpkins at our local Fred Meyer East store. The second shot shows two Edelweiss flowers that I cut from our Edelweiss plant and then pressed them. Looks nice, no?
